This documentary is not merely a film about one of the most fascinating Austrian shipping companies of the Austrian Imperial and Royal Monarchy: the long-forgotten shipping line “Austro-Americana”, which operated between Trieste and the US from 1895 to 1915. It is also a study of the emigration history of Austria. In the year 1913 alone, more than 40.000 Austrians left their homeland for the New World aboard Austro-Americana ships. The shipping line was one of the top ten carriers of emigrants in the port of New York, bringing them across the Atlantic in search of the American Dream.
