Sparse vegetation, white-gray rock and wildly fissured stone – this new production is all about the Brenta Dolomites, the only dolomite group west of the Adige River. This rugged landscape is an Eldorado for passionate climbers from near and far, climbers like Cesare Maestri, aka the “Spider of the Dolomites”. A local hero of the Trentino climbing scene, he has achieved numerous first ascents in the Brenta Dolomites and in the Dolomites. Worldwide fame finally came with his controversial first ascent on the Argentinean-Chilean Cerro Torre. The Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, which encompasses the Brenta Dolomites, is also known much further afield. Offering secluded mountains and a varied diet, it provides ideal conditions for bears to live, roam and take shelter. The Alpine brown bear was reintroduced to Trentino more than 20 years ago. Now 40 to 60 specimens are said to roam the wilderness. The best known is probably Bruno, the brown bear that wandered as far as Austria and Bavaria and became something of a celebrity – before being shot.
