Often lauded and just as beautiful, diverse and scenically spectacular as travel guides will have us know: the rail route between Barcelona and Bilbao. The train, operated by the state-owned railway company Renfe, travels along the foothills of the Pyrenees alongside the River Ebro. The point of departure is the Catalan metropolis Barcelona. The journey to Bilbao, the Basque city on the Atlantic coast, takes seven hours and leads through extremely diverse provinces, from Catalonia into the Basque country.
