Glittering, precious stones, adventurers in search of the big find, women that wash emeralds, a vivacious samba queen, Pomeranians, who emigrated more than 100 years ago and Ouro Preto, the former black gold town, now a World Heritage Site. We can encounter this and much more on our journey aboard the Brazilian “Gem Express”, from Belo Horizonte to the port city of Vitoria, north of Rio de Janeiro. During the thirteen-hour trip, the train rattles along at a leisurely pace through fascinating landscapes: past Brazil’s largest open pit mines, on to the lush primeval forests alongside the Rio Doce, the sweet river, then on to Pancas, the home of the Pomeranian Germans and the unusual looking mountains – the so-called sugar loaves. The journey ends in the bustling port of Vitoria, with its spectacularly beautiful beaches.
