La Gomera is the second smallest of the Canary Islands, greener, full of nature and wilder than the larger and more popular islands of the Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. Here, the trade winds become entangled with the mountains and thus provide valuable moisture to a thou-sand-year-old evergreen cloud forest. The island has so far also been spared mass tourism, mainly because there is no direct flight connection to anywhere in continental Europe. This makes La Gomera an insider tip for both hikers and nature lovers. The Canary Islands lie some 100 kilometres off the African coast and, as they belong to Spain, are also members of the EU. La Gomera, of all places, this small and peaceful island, was chosen by Christopher Columbus for his legendary voyage of discovery. From here he set out in search of India and, quite by accident, found America. La Gomera is always good for a surprise or two.
