The “Parenzana” narrow-gauge railroad, connecting Trieste to Poreč, was closed in 1935 but now forms the “Path of Health and Friendship,” traversing Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. Constructed in the early 20th century to bolster Istria’s development, the railroad carried goods like wine, olives, and wood. Today, cyclists on electrified bikes enjoy the well-preserved route, passing through tunnels and viaducts. The journey unveils former station buildings, some repurposed, echoing the charm of Greater Istria. Filmmaker Peppo Wagner explores the “Parenzana’s” historic route, featuring Piran, birthplace of Giuseppe Tartini, Secovlje’s salt marshes, and Motovun’s truffle forests, offering a captivating glimpse into the region’s rich tapestry.
