The northern Italian province of South Tyrol is rather unusual: this is where the African and the European continents meet and the warm Mediterranean climate collides with the cooler northern European weather conditions, creating spectacularly diverse and often extreme habitats. High mountains and deep valleys provide a home for a wide range of flora and fauna – and, since the last Ice Age, for humans. The combination of cultivated landscapes and Alpine wildernesses have attracted animals large and small, from chamois, otters and shrews to wallcreeper birds, hoopoes and spotted nutcrackers. Horned vipers slither among the rocks, while scorpions bask in the warm sun. This documentary examines the many natural riches of the “land between” – South Tyrol.
