Did the GDR fake the death of newborns to then hand them over for adoption? Not because the well-being of those children was at risk, but because their parents were political dissidents. Because the regime saw them as “agitating against the state”, or because they did not display a “socialistic lifestyle”, which simply meant, for example, that they were young, single mothers. The four-part true crime documentary “Stolen – The GDR’s lost babies” investigates every lead and every scrap of evidence of these unparalleled forms of child abductions. Where there only used to be moments of suspicion, this documentary reveals new insights. Will there finally be enough evidence to make possible an accounting of the past? The series tells the story of mothers, searching for their children, because they fully believe them to be alive. Will Yvonne, Regina, Sabine, and Maria finally learn the truth about their sons and daughters, more than 30 years after the end of the GDR? Will they be able to find them and see them for the first time?
