The Stockholm archipelago comprises more than 30,000 islands and islets. This unique world begins just a few kilometres from Stockholm’s city centre, stretches out far into the Baltic Sea and has managed to retain most of its original charm. Most of the islands can only be accessed by boat. For many Swedes, this is the ideal spot in which to spend summer holidays in their own country. But the archipelago is not simply an idyll for summer visitors and holidaymakers. Maria Jörgensson runs a farm on the tiny island of Grinda. Farming in the archipelago is anything but easy. It is not unusual to spot cows sailing by on boats here. Sanna Thimmig Johansen lives on Sandhamn, where Midsommar is still celebrated according to old traditions. Seafaring has left its mark everywhere on and between the islands. Per Normark is a wreck diver, his speciality being well-preserved ships from the Hanseatic Age. The remains rest on the seabed as if it were a museum: anchors, cannonballs, clay jugs, ships planks et al.
