“Summer of Destiny 1683 – The Turks at the Gates of Vienna” tells the story of the siege of Vienna in 1683. But we not only hear eyewitness reports from those under siege, we also get to see Vienna from the Ottomans’ perspective. Turkish travel writer Evliyâ Çelebi provides a truly imaginative portrayal of Vienna, outlining the impression Vienna made on the Ottoman wayfarers. The siege, however, left its mark on the city’s architecture, that can still be seen today. For the Habsburg Empire, too, the Turks were not merely dreaded enemies: reports from emissaries to the “Sublime Porte” tell of the Ottoman Empire’s cultural and scientific achievements.
