Calories are the hardest currency in the battle to lose weight. How much of it does a food contain? How much of it do I burn when I exercise? However, it has long been clear to many experts that this calculation is far too simple. Because it does not depend so much on the number of calories as on the composition of the food. Carbohydrates, proteins or fats – numerically our energy balance is always the same if the number of calories is the same. Factually, it makes a considerable difference what we eat, for example a can of cola with 140 calories or a broccoli with 140 calories. Medical journalist Bernhard Hain investigates this calorie lie, which has already misled countless people who want to eat a healthy diet or lose weight.
