Some bloom elegantly in one main color, such as the blue iris meadow in Trautenfels, or the white daffodil meadows. Some are many-colored, covered with an innumerable variety of different flowers. Some are humid, dark and deep, and some are on dry, sandy or rocky soils. They occur from the lowlands of the Styrian Thermenland to the edge of the Dachstein glacier: meadows. They provide habitats for countless insects, nurseries for ground breeders such as partridge, quail or whinchat, and hiding places for many young animals. More than 10,000 animal species live among, with and from the grasses and flowers. However, only just under two percent of the 1.4 million hectares of Austrian meadows have kept this diversity of species. The meadows have changed over the past 50 years due to industrialized agriculture.
