It should have been a demonstration of imperial power and the reawakened self-confidence of the imperial and royal monarchy after the lost wars against Piedmont/France and Prussia. In fact, the 1873 World’s Fair in Vienna was marked by mishaps, bad luck and a veritable bankruptcy. Nevertheless, the monumental exposition became the stage for world politics, spurred numerous innovations and gave Vienna the way to become a world city. In her film, director Barbara Weissenbeck brings the time around 1873 to life with elaborate animations of the World’s Fair grounds including its central building, the Rotunda, as well as with animated photos and postcards.
