It is an instrument of torture – and yet it is considered a sign of salvation and God’s love: the cross is the central Christian symbol. Filmmaker Stefan Ludwig undertakes a personal quest for a convincing interpretation of the cross today. He searches for answers in art and theology, but also in dialogue with people of faith and with people who vehemently reject the cross. In doing so, the cross always remains an imposition, a provocation, a nuisance – also because it points to what has been repressed: to the questions of suffering and death, of the victory of evil and the experienced powerlessness of the good.
