Max Winkler, head of a pig farm, lies dead on the ground in the barn. Two employees find the body and notify the authorities. When Moritz Eisner and Bibi Fellner arrive at the scene of the crime, the employees are acting suspiciously but do not seem to be the culprits. And just when the forensic experts have begun to systematically search the barn, the automatic barn cleaning system unexpectedly starts and destroys the few remaining traces. Little is known about the victim either: Max Winkler wanted to expand and become the big player in pig breeding in Austria. However, he was unsuccessful in doing so because the project of a feed factory, which he wanted to have built in Bulgaria with the support of the EU and in cooperation with an agricultural multinational operating from Vienna, failed. An animal protection NGO, which repeatedly carried out acts of protest and sabotage at the farm comes into the sights of the investigators. But then a new trace appears for the case: Supported by an official of the European Anti-Fraud Office and a lawyer from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, Moritz and Bibi get to the bottom of Winkler’s international business entanglements. This is likely to have involved subsidy fraud on a grand scale – and there was an anonymous complaint against a Bulgarian company a few weeks ago that seems to point to precise insider knowledge at the farm.
