Leipzig, December 1734: Johann Sebastian Bach is working tirelessly to complete his “Christmas Oratorio”, supported by his wife, Magdalena. The city council and church authorities take a dim view of choral work in general and are keeping a close eye on the choirmaster. Bach hopes that the Oratorio will see him appointed Dresden’s court composer and expects his family to support him. But his strained relationship with son Emanuel, coupled with the council’s decision to ban the upcoming performance, puts the family under pressure. 10-year-old Gottfried struggles to cope with the conflicts around him and disappears. Only his sister, Elisabeth, realises that something is amiss…
