Like a string of pearls, the Frisian Islands line up along the German North Sea coast – from Sylt on the border with Denmark, to Borkum, close to the neighbouring Netherlands. They are immensely significant for the animal world. They are home to seals and grey seals. But especially birds endangered on the mainland, like the short-eared owl, find protection and peace here. The film presents tiny creatures, brave fighters, like the sandy plover and surprising visitors, like the hedgehog. When a tidal surge churns up the North Sea, it hits the island of Sylt with all of its might. But not only tidal surges keep changing the islands. The continual warming of the North Sea is bringing about a kind of “underwater globalization”. Who has a future on the “Islands in motion” and who could lose the fight against the consequences of change?
