In north-eastern Italy, a great river continues to flow freely through Alpine valleys and alluvial forests, eventually reaching the Adriatic Sea. The Tagliamento is a river like no other, and the wildlife that exists along its banks is unique and spectacular. The calls of rare, iconic animals like the wolf, the lynx and the jackal still echo through the trees and across the plains that line what has become known as the “king of the Alpine rivers”. The waters that flow through the Tagliamento’s myriad intertwined channels are similarly teeming with life. This is Europe’s last wild river, following a course that remains unaltered by human intervention to this day.
