The use of genetic engineering in the food industry remains controversial, even after almost 30 years. Opponents criticize the environmental impact and the fact that just a few corporations hold monopoly power over seed production, as well as the potential long-term consequences of GMO production. In Europe, consumer resistance to genetically modified foodstuffs is widespread, and the planting of GMO crops is heavily regulated. On the other hand, countries with large agricultural sectors like the USA, Canada, Brazil, and India swear by genetically modified crops. They are grown on around 200 million hectares of land across the planet. The film examines different approaches in countries like Belgium, the USA, and Sri Lanka and reveals how scientists, farmers, and governments approach the question of genetically modified food and alternative agricultural practices.
