A Childless Society

ORF-E
German, English
1 x 52 mins

There are fewer children born in Europe than anywhere else in the world. By now, no European country is able to maintain its population numbers without immigration. In some countries, like Germany and Austria, the birthrate has dropped to 1.5 children per woman or less. Many couples hesitate to have children in the face of the climate crisis, wars, pandemics and economic insecurity. In industrialised nations, populations are in decline. Without migrants there would not only be a lack of workers, but social security systems could also cease to function. Experts predict that this trend will continue in the decades to come, and this documentary explores the many different consequences a world without children could have on society.
