This documentary is a cinematic ramble along South Austria’s largest and most important river and a portrait of the unique riverine landscapes and mountain regions where three cultures intersect. The film takes us along the river to hidden gems and remote farmsteads, through deep side valleys with mountain streams and to mighty mountain ranges and craggy outcrops, but it also sheds light on the region’s long and sometimes painful history. With a length of 749 kilometers, the Drava is the Danube’s fourth longest tributary. Its 264-kilometer journey through Carinthia takes it past imposing massifs such as the Gailtal Alps or the Karavanks, through historical cities such as Spittal an der Drau, Villach and Ferlach, and across ancient rural cultural landscapes. The Drava is the oldest and was once the most important transport route in Carinthia. It is the region’s green lifeline.
