“Saving the Floodplains” takes a closer look at infinitely changeable and increasingly threatened floodplain environments and examines how a conservation project in southern Austria is attempting to find a way of rejuvenating such natural areas. Sections of forest, meadows, and bodies of water are purchased and rewilded in order to create habitats for innumerable animals including kingfishers, beavers, and more than 50 different fish species, including the great huchen. The documentary reinforces the ecological significance of floodplains and explains why the efforts to maintain them are so important.
