SUPERFISH -SALMON opens with a wildlife spectacle of abundance – coastal Alaska’s massive pink salmon run. Bears, eagles, seals, mink and a host of other predators, both familiar and less so, feed on the tens of millions of salmon newly in from the sea, highlighting the essential place of salmon in this ecosystem. Witnessing the natural extravaganza is marine biologist and veteran filmmaker Rick Rosenthal, for whom this is an inciting incident. Wild salmon numbers have fallen dramatically worldwide, due to natural and man-made causes, especially climate change. Is what he’s seen, just a blip in an inexorable downward trend? Or is something else going on? He embarks on a journey to film in some of the world’s salmon strongholds and makes some surprising discoveries.
