The Forgotten – The Women of the Peasants’ War

2025 marks the 500th anniversary of the German Peasants’ War, which caused significant upheaval far beyond Germany and its neighbouring countries. The rebellion began in Württemberg and proceeded to spread into central Germany, Switzerland and Austria. As is so often the case in conventional history studies, the war has largely been presented as a story of men against men. This documentary takes a different approach and describes how the events of 1525 changed the lives of people at the heart of Europe based on the biographies of four women involved in the uprising. The central protagonist is Magdalena Gaismair from Tyrol, who played an important role in her husband’s rise to the head of the insurrectionist farmers’ movement, and whose escape to exile on horseback while heavily pregnant made her a legend.
