In 2026, the International Mozarteum Foundation celebrates two special anniversaries: the 270th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the 70th anniversary of Mozart Week. This festive year kicks off with an extraordinary highlight – a new production of The Magic Flute, blending poetic imagination, scenic sophistication, and historical performance practices into a captivating experience. Directed by artistic director Rolando Villazón, the production at the House for Mozart combines traditional historical performance with contemporary scenic approaches, capturing both the magic of the original and the perspective of our time. The Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, conducted by Roberto González-Monjas, provides the musical backdrop, enhancing the dramatic structure and bringing the psychological depth of the characters to life. A distinguished cast shapes the characters with unique profiles: Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night, Franz-Josef Selig as Sarastro, Emily Pogorelc as Pamina, and Magnus Dietrich as Tamino. Nikolaus Habjan appears as “Mozart”, playfully reflecting on the creative process of the opera’s creation. Between fantastic fairy tale, comedic lightness, and metaphysical symbolism unfolds a story of friendship, love, enlightenment, and triumph over darkness. The Magic Flute reveals Mozart’s unparalleled ability to unite the human and the supernatural in every scene, inviting the audience to rediscover this timeless journey.
