Ania Shmitz is a bank employee and mother of two. Since her divorce and a key experience, she has been actively involved in the understaffed volunteer fire department in her hometown in northern Germany. She is conscientious and reliable, but finds it difficult to make decisions. Out of the blue, she is appointed to the vacant position of group leader on an interim basis – a move that is met with mixed reactions from her colleagues. During her first rescue mission, she clashes with Meike Honnich, who is joining the team from the neighboring brigade. The farmer and former soldier has a brusque manner that takes some getting used to. At first glance, Meike recognizes Ania’s deficits and makes her feel her contempt.
