Millions of years ago, a mighty mountain range rose up from deep within our Earth. Over time, fascinating natural environments were born: vast landscapes of snow and ice, thunderous waterfalls and great, sandy peaks that rise into the sky like pyramids. The Großglockner, Austria’s highest mountain, towers above these incredible habitats. For now, the great peak remains the home of the largest glacier in the eastern Alps. How long this remains the case will be determined by the pace of climate change, which is increasingly forcing flora, fauna and mountaineering enthusiasts to face new challenges and adapt to new realities. Many animals, including ibex, eagles, marmots, alpine bumblebees, glacier harvestmen and western house martins, find themselves fighting for survival in the ever-changing conditions more than 3000 metres above sea level.
