Hardly anyone knows that Lower Austria was once home to one of the largest tank factories of the Third Reich. At the same time, one of the largest satellite camps of the Mauthausen concentration camp was built there, with thousands of prisoners producing more than 5,000 tanks for Hitler’s Wehrmacht. “Toy Factory” was the cynical code name for the tank factory, which had been planned soon after the Anschluss. The Nazi regime turned the tranquil village, located at a strategic railroad junction, into a hub of the German Reich’s armaments industry, which played a central role in the German army’s striking power, especially towards the end of the war. In this documentary, contemporary witnesses who lived through the tank production plant and the environment of Nazi rule share their stories. Historians and extensive archive material provide an insight into the construction, operation, and scope of Hitler’s production facility in the context of dramatic world events.
