Before fifteen-year-old Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria married Habsburg’s family’s young Franz Joseph and as a consequence became that tragic Icon of Austrian history, she spent a relatively lighthearted childhood at the Starnberger lake in Bavaria. Oftentimes, the question arose, whether the madness of the Bavarian King Ludwig II. was based on Elisabeths restless spirit and the mental breakdowns of her son crown prince Rudolf, as a reaction to inheritance through the incestuous dynastic relations within their family. Producer Stefan Wolner explores this question and compares the historic reality of Elisabeth’s Bavarian adolescence with the clichés of the movies that were released post world war II.
