Some Austrian summer inns thrived on the charisma of their hostesses. Around the turn of the century, the Viennese Olga Schneider became legendary when she married the owner of the Reichenau Thalhof and to become a beloved innkeeper. She was even rumored to have had a romance with Arthur Schnitzler, who frequented the place; however, such a relationship had no future due to the morals of the time. This documentary showcases the pioneers of early local tourism and the locations where the first hotels sprang up. Even though comfort back then was different from today’s standards. Altough having the toilet in the hallway was unavoidable, the service was already highly prioritized. In upscale houses, there were two servants for every guest. In 1864, a daring hotelier built the first mountain hotel of the Habsburg Monarchy atop Schafberg Mountain, high above Lake Wolfgang. The newly built Schafberg Cog Railway even transported guests to the summit.
