Fearless, Daring, Radical – Artists of the Feminist Avantgarde

When women in the 1970s worldwide rose up to fight against discrimination, oppression, and traditional gender roles, many female artists were among them, challenging patriarchal power structures with radical performances, photo and video installations. In Susanne Riegler’s documentary, they recount how they were spurned and ridiculed by the male-dominated art scene. They had to muster enormous strength, perseverance, and ingenuity to continue pursuing their themes. It would take almost 40 years for their works to be recognized and included in the canon of art history. A key factor in this was Gabriele Schor, founding director of the Vienna VERBUND COLLECTION, who coined the term ‘feminist avant-garde’ and succeeded in establishing the pioneering work of these artists both academically and in museums and in the art market.
