The largest non draining steppe lake in Central Europe lies in the Pannonian Plain between Austria and Hungary. Surrounded by an enormous reed bed with unique flora and fauna, the FertÅ‘/Neusiedlersee landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Almost half of this strictly protected reed bed is in the national park nature reserve. Where once the Iron Curtain ran, and where watchtowers and an artificial concrete island in the lake still recall that border, countless bird species fly across the windy skies, herds of red deer trot through the reeds and rattling its beak is the region’s most famous inhabitant – the stork.
