This documentary explores the fascinating phenomena of collective intelligence and shows how groups of animals and schools of fish are able to coordinate and exchange information without having to rely on orders or leaders. European researchers are working on applying the lessons they learn from these natural behaviors in the fields of robotics, logistics, and social participation. A central element of the film is the visit to the University of Konstanz’s “Imaging Hangar” in Germany, one of the world’s biggest laboratories for the study of collective intelligence. Here, researchers are able to examine swarms of life forms in a state-of-the-art motion capture facility. At the “Artificial Science Lab” in Graz, Austria, biologist Thomas Schmickl uses robots to study the behavior of a bee population. In addition, the film shows how principles of collective intelligence can be used to solve technical or social challenges. In Klagenfurt, Melanie Schranz investigates how bee algorithms might increase efficiency in semiconductor factories, while the “Complexity Science Hub” at Switzerland’s ETH Zurich university studies the significance of diversity in collective intelligence and pro-democratic participation models.
