Don Carlo is one of the most sublime creations in opera history. Verdi expressed the deeply human feelings of the Infante and Élisabeth de Valois, who are not allowed to live out their love due to reason of state, with inimitably touching music. In addition, there are impressive folk scenes, elegant courtly ceremonial and the mysticism of Spanish Catholicism. Public favorite Günther Groissböck not only lends his voice to Spain’s King Philip II, he also directs Verdi’s monumental adaptation of Friederich Schiller’s drama, together with Monica Ivona Rusu-Radman. Under the musical direction of Christoph Campestrini, Margarita Gritskova is Princess Eboli and Thomas Weinhappel is the confidant of the Infante Marquis Posa.
