How do various countries address contemporary challenges like housing shortages, elderly poverty, or struggling healthcare systems? Are there successful models that could be replicated elsewhere? Where do strategies fail, and what are the interconnections? The struggle for affordable housing is present all throughout Europe, leaving many elderly individuals facing difficulties. Three reporters are on the road to find out what factors contribute to poverty in old age and what changes need to be made to prevent this. In the UK, correspondent Jörg Winter meets pensioners who can only afford to live in run-down areas such as Blackpool in northern England. In Germany, correspondent Maresi Engelmayer finds out that it is mainly women who are affected by poverty in old age. Due to the so-called spousal splitting in German tax law, they often end up losing out. In Denmark, correspondent Isabella Purkart learns that the right state measures lead to happy and financially well-off pensioners.
