The film tells of three extraordinary events at the end of the Second World War that have one thing in common: The civil disobedience of the individual decides over life and death – and sometimes also over the further course of history… The documentary accompanies two historians as they research and clear up the murders of the “Strange Cargo“ crew. They found documents in American, German and Austrian archives that allowed them to reconstruct the plane’s flight, its crash and the subsequent events in great detail. Documented interrogations of perpetrators and their associates, interviews with witnesses who are still alive and research on location reveal how such lynchings occurred. The story of Mac D. Moore and his 17-year-old saviour Heinrich Lederbauer is unique in that it proves that people were not forced to commit murder. There were other options. There are no excuses… The two main protagonists relate the events of the time in front of the camera. Heinrich Lederbauer is still alive. Moore passed away in January 2019. His memories were recorded before his death.
