Popular travel destinations such as the lagoon city of Venice and the Croatian port city of Dubrovnik, which were completely overcrowded before the coronavirus pandemic struck, are almost void of tourists this summer. In contrast, Amsterdam is currently groaning under a rush: especially Germans, Belgians and French, who are used to taking their vacations in Italy and Croatia, are now heading to the Netherlands due to the pandemic. World Journal looks at how the coronavirus has changed tourism and explores picturesque, medieval Dubrovnik, which is back in the hands of the locals. In the past, up to seven cruise ships would dock there each day, and thousands of day visitors would crowd the narrow streets of the historic old town. In the previous year, the number of giant cruisers was limited to two per day, but since the coronavirus struck, there have been none. Venice is also more tranquil than it has been for decades. The low numbers of tourists visiting the lagoon city are fascinating, but they also represent a huge loss of income for hoteliers, restaurants and souvenir shops. The few locals still living there are now hoping for a new start for tourism, which will make Venice a city worth living in again. The opposite is true of picturesque Amsterdam, which is currently barely able to save itself from tourists and is already calling on visitors to avoid coming at weekends, because the prescribed minimum social distancing rules can no longer be observed in the city.
