The approach to death, transience, and remembrance in musical culture does not necessarily lead to mere sadness. Together with Salzburg’s star baritone Rafael Fingerlos, who co-wrote the script, director Martin Pichl demonstrates in his film that mourning, cheerfulness, humor, and consolation can be closely intertwined in many musical traditions. Remembrance of the deceased is not only somber but can also be touching, meaningful, and sometimes even humorous. The film traverses grand classical music (Schubert, Brahms, Mahler, Strauss, Mozart, Clara Schumann, Mendelssohn) and Alpine as well as Viennese song traditions. The format gains particular authenticity through live performances at historical venues and conversations with artists (Sascha El Mouissi, the ensemble Tschejefem, and the Divinnerinnen) and an undertaker who discusses contemporary forms of burial and the surprisingly “cheerful” side of his daily work. The audience is taken on an emotional journey, revealing how colorful and diverse musical consolation and humorous farewell rituals can be. The film celebrates the vitality inherent in music, especially in pieces that deal with farewell and death.
