Saalbach-Hinterglemm hosted the Alpine Ski World Championships in 2025. While the world’s best racers compete for medals at top speed on the slopes in winter, nature follows its own rhythm throughout the year. From grey wagtails and beavers to bumblebees and bearded vultures, and from red-backed shrikes in rose hedges to grass frogs in reservoir ponds, the area’s wildlife tells stories that reflect not only their own lives, but also those of humans. Finding a balance between the needs of wildlife and people is an ongoing challenge for the locals, who approach it with great passion. Here, efforts are underway to find better ways of sharing the natural world and to learn important lessons for the future. For Saalbach, and for the planet.
