Life for women and girls in Pakistan is far more challenging than in most other countries in the world. They are often forced to live within strict hierarchies, particular in the extremely conservative lower classes. The country’s 1973 constitution awarded men and women equal rights, but in everyday life women continue to be subjected to violence, oppression and discrimination. In Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, ORF reporter Rosa Lyon meets four women who have found ways to empower themselves and who use their courage and perseverance to move mountains. Pakistan’s first female architect, Yasmeen Lari, made a name for herself with iconic designs and devotes much of her time to helping victims of floods and earthquakes build emission-free, sustainable and enduring homes. Aansoo Kohli is disabled, but that has not stopped her turning a former cowshed into a school for girls denied educational opportunities elsewhere. Muqaddas Tahir campaigns for the conservation of mangrove forests and a liveable environment, while Saba Edhi provides a refuge for girls and young women from difficult and dangerous family situations.
