Transatlantic Tastemaker – Otto Kallir & Austrian Modernism

ORF-E
English
1 x 35 min

Otto Kallir was a visionary art dealer, gallerist and publisher who founded the “Neue Galerie” in Vienna, Austria, in 1923. He was instrumental in promoting artists such as Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and Vincent Van Gogh. In 1938, he was forced to flee the National Socialists and escaped to New York, where he helped to introduce Austrian expressionists to the wider world. In this documentary Renée Price, director of New York’s “Neue Galerie”, and Kallir’s granddaughter Jane Kallir, recall Kallir’s pioneering work and his influence on the art world. The film also evaluates Kallir’s role in the restitution of art after the war and features interviews with art dealers, gallerists and archivists who place Kallir’s story and his achievements for Austrian Modernism within a wider international context. “Transatlantic Tastemaker” is a tribute to a man with an unparalleled sense of artistic excellence and the drive and tenacity to leave his mark on the art world despite never being an artist himself: Otto Kallir.
