Dr. Karla Eckhardt, a forensic psychiatrist, advocates for leniency measures for the convicted murderer Anton Lisky, who brutally beat a friend to death and threatened his girlfriend in a jealous rage. Despite the scepticism of the inspector who arrested Lisky at the time, he is granted unaccompanied release to his workplace in a nursery in agreement with Karla’s colleague Dr. Paul Kressmann. The apparent trust is shattered when Lisky’s new colleague is found dead in the nursery’s greenhouse and Lisky disappears without a trace. Lisky shows up at Karla’s place, professing his innocence before running away and barricading himself with a gun. Dr. Kressmann offers to talk to Lisky, but then a shot is fired. Lisky is found dead on the ground, allegedly after confessing and committing suicide. Although this closes the case for the inspector, Karla doubts the story and embarks on a dangerous search for the truth.
