In many parts of the world, alcohol is an integral part of celebrations like birthdays, weddings, or Christmas. However, a change is taking place: movements like “Dry January” and “Sober Curiosity”, which encourage a reduction or total cessation of alcohol consumption, are becoming increasingly popular. Gen Z, in particular, shows less and less interest in drinking. The documentary explores the stories of a woman with a liver transplant and a banker’s experiences of the prevalence of alcohol within London’s financial industry. Both live in the UK, a country renowned for its drinking culture. In France, where wine is a way of life, a winery that produces alcohol-free products is carving out a new path. Iceland, which was once (in)famous for the high alcohol consumption of its youth, is now considered a role model for successful preventive measures like a ban on alcohol advertising and increased parental inclusion and education. Are we approaching a new sober age – and what would this mean for individuals and society as a whole?
