“Bella gerant alii tu felix Austria nube – Let others wage war, but thou, O happy Austria, marry” was the motto of the Habsburgs. Marriages were generally not an affair of the heart in aristocratic circles, but the Habsburgs pursued their marriage policy most resolutely and thus rose to become one of the leading dynasties in Europe. Marriage for purely political reasons was essential for maintaining the power of the dynasty – which was the top priority – and imperial children were raised to bow to this dynastic duty. While most imperial family members submitted to the political marriage plans without protest, there were also exceptions and genuine love stories that were not simply casual affairs, but – “where the love was stronger”. The documentary traces the great love stories of the imperial family, describes their struggle for the great love, the resistance that had to be overcome and where love finally triumphed – but also the dramatic consequences that such a love could have.
