Season 1: Braunschlag

Braunschlag is a more or less idyllic place in Austria, whose inhabitants are a league of their own. Among others there’s a former beauty queen, a UFO landing site operator, a pair of weird doctors and the governor’s nephew. Gerhard Tschach, mayor of Braunschlag, has a problem: After several failed business ventures, his town is bankrupt. Therefore, with his best friend, disco owner Richard Pfeisinger, he decides to fake a Marian apparition, to make tourists flood the ailing town and bring about the hoped-for financial recovery. Braunschlag starts to flourish, but the two hard-drinking men soon lose control. Somewhere between the delusions of the locals, pressure from the state capital, intractable marital problems and the Vatican, the situation escalates more and more – and the miracle of Braunschlag is becoming a nightmare fast.

Season 2: Braunschlag 1986 – Long Versions

Episode 1
14 years after the nuclear waste accident, the small Austrian town of Braunschlag is finally accessible again. Just two inhabitants are left: the mayor, Gerri Tschach, and the nightclub owner Richard Pfeisinger. As the day of the grand re-opening arrives, they realize that nobody wants to return to Braunschlag. Upset, both men just want everything to be the same as it once was. Like back in 1986, for example, when Tschach met his wife Herta. The friends decree that, within the town’s borders, it will be 1986 again. Clearly, they are not the only people pining for an age before cell phones, social media and the internet. The village soon attracts huge crowds. Politicians, particularly those on the right, take note. But is it possible to bring back the good old days? A tour de force through our very modern longings for a future that lies in the past.

Episode 2

The past has most definitely refused to remain buried. Elfie Pfeisinger wants both Gerri and Richard to take responsibility for her anxious son Winni, who needs more than one father. Tschach, the mayor, is distraught when his wife Herta demands a divorce. Dr. Feist finds himself in a marital crisis because of his father’s ashes, and Ronnie Zemann is making money off everybody. The African priest Riccardo fights for survival as people demonstrate for and against him at the edge of town. BB, the investor, is determined to turn Braunschlag into one big theme park. And the town’s grumpy old man, Reinhard Matussek, has re-emerged and is promising everyone a better life on the distant planet Blax. Gerri Tschach finds himself wondering whether his plan really was a good idea – and how on Earth he can put an end to the whole thing…

Season 3: Braunschlag 1986 – Short Versions

Episode 1 – The Return

Episode 2 – Happy Old Year

The 1980s revival is a resounding success and attracts attention. The youthful investor BB hopes to turn Braunschlag into a theme park, and the politicians intend to leave their mark. The fact that a lot of aspects of society were very different in 1986 causes trouble. And then the mysterious Ronda appears on the dance floor of the Disco Lametta nightclub…

Episode 3 – The Envoy

Braunschlag’s main square has become an open-air market for tourists obsessed with the past. Breakdancing, yo-yos, candy cane, and air mattresses are all here, as are a few election speeches from a darker past. Matussek, the town’s grumpy old man, waits for the aliens to arrive, while the Pfeisinger/Tschach household is consumed by childcare discussions – until the child in question disappears. Ronnie and Kevin encounter each other, and ancient jealousies soon rear their ugly heads. Ricardo, the town’s African priest, takes shelter from racists in his church, and Dr. Feist faces a dilemma related to his dead father’s ashes. A large amount of money appears in Gerri Tschach’s bank account – a transparent attempt at blackmail.

Episode 4: A Miracle
Something is rotten in the town of Braunschlag. After a fruitless search, Elfie’s son finally turns up at BB’s. The young investor sees Winni as his potential disciple and hopes he will help him sell off Braunschlag. However, children should never be given too much power. Riccardo, the priest, collapses with some mysterious injuries. Mayor Tschach desperately looks for some way to save his little world. Fortunately, he has nothing to lose. Meanwhile, the journalist Frosch makes an incredible discovery while looking into Ronda.

Episode 5: Blax
If you want to ruin a potential deal, the easiest way is to the damage the goods on offer. Tschach introduces the old Austrian currency in Braunschlag and decrees that all shops and businesses must close at six p.m. on the dot. Naturally, his friend Pfeisinger has already sold his nightclub to BB, and the young investor is up in arms. Herta is also emotional, as her beloved Helfried has a dark secret. On the edges of town, the alternative crowd are in uproar in response to the treatment of Riccardo, the African priest. The party is well and truly over. Quo vadis, Braunschlag?
